Using Meta Tags

The second part of your page the search engine reads are your Meta Tags. There are many different Meta Tags which can be used to provide more information about your page.

<META NAME="author" CONTENT="">
<META NAME="copyright" CONTENT="">
<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="">
<META NAME="description" CONTENT="">
<META NAME="page-topic" CONTENT="">
<META NAME="audience" CONTENT="">
<META NAME="robots" CONTENT="">

For better search engine optimization only 3 of these are really necessary

<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="Your Primary & Secondary Keywords">
<META NAME="description" CONTENT="
Your Page Description">
<META NAME="page-topic" CONTENT="
Your Page Topic">

Like your title tag the same rules apply for your Meta Tags - You should place your main keyword at the start of the relevant tags, do not use the same keyword more than 3 times and cut down on unnecessary words which add no value.

Lets carry on with our example for SEOselfhelp.com. The main keyword we want to target is 'SEO Help'. Our secondary keywords are 'SEO Tutorial', 'SEO Guide', 'Search Engine Optimization' and 'Organic SEO'.

Keywords Meta Tag

<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="Your Primary & Secondary Keywords">

The Keywords Meta Tag needs to contain your primary and secondary keywords with your main keyword being in position 1. It is easy to get carried away with keywords but again you will only be penalized if you do. Keep your keywords related to your page by using what you have already researched as valuable in the previous lessons.

Below is a bad example of how to use your keywords meta tag. Lets pretend we're a search engine again to see why this is.

<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="search engine optimization, seo tutorial, seo guide, seo help, seo tips, organic seo, search engine rankings, search engine marketing, search engine, seo optimization">
What is good?
SEO Help is used once
SEO is used more than once
Our main keywords are used
What is bad?
SEO Help is not the 1st keyword
SEO is used 6 times (3 times Max)
Non-valuable keywords used

Although this is not awful as it does provide relevant information to the search engines about the page, it is far from perfect due to poor positioning of our main keywords, excess use of other keywords and the use of non-valuable keywords.

To use the keywords meta tag to its maximum potential all we need to do is analyze the bad and change to good.

<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="seo help, search engine optimization help, seo tutorial, guide, tips, organic, search engine marketing">
What was bad?
SEO Help was not the 1st keyword
SEO was used 6 times
Too many non-valuable keywords
What makes this good?
SEO Help is now positioned 1st
SEO Help is now used 2 times
Main keywords used and condensed

Things to remember:

  • Use your main keywords in position 1
  • Use your secondary keywords
  • Do not use your keywords more than 3 times
  • Get rid of non-valuable keywords which dilute the relevance of your main keywords

Description Meta Tag

<META NAME="description" CONTENT="Your Page Description">

The Description Meta Tag is used to provide the description of your website. If you have little content on your page then this is the line that the search engines will use about your website when it appears in their search results.

It's important to note that this tag requires a sentence and not a list of keywords like the keyword meta tag. It should therefore be readable and make sense. You should use both your primary keywords and secondary keywords in this sentence.

A bad example of the Description Meta Tag looks something like this:

<META NAME="description" CONTENT="Welcome to SEOselfhelp.com, Your Free Guide to Organic Search Engine Optimization. Get Higher Search Engine Rankings for your Website">
What is good?
SEO Help is used once
Some main keywords are used
What is bad?
SEO Help is not the 1st keyword
Non-valuable words used

Like your title and keyword tags, the main keyword you are targeting should be in position 1 or at the least in . Your secondary keywords should be used where possible and you should limit non-valuable words so as to not dilute their value.

A good example would be:

<META NAME="description" CONTENT="SEO Help Tutorial - Organic SEO Help Guide for successful Search Engine Optimization Campaigns">
What was bad?
SEO Help was not the 1st keyword
Non-valuable words were used
What makes this good?
SEO Help is 1st and used 2 times
All our main keywords are used

Things to remember:

  • Use your main keywords in position 1
  • Use your secondary keywords
  • Do not use your keywords more than 3 times
  • Get rid of non-valuable keywords

Page Topic Tag

<META NAME="page-topic" CONTENT="Your Page Topic">

The Page Topic Meta Tag is rarely used anymore as it adds no real value to your page. However, if you are going to use it then simply use the main keyword you are targeting, in our case 'SEO Help'

Go to Step 9 - Using Alt Tags
